Effective Tips to Write a Retirement Letter

A retirement letter is written to the immediate supervisor by an employee who is to be retired from his work life. Officially the letter should be written and handed over to the concern person about six weeks in advance. This helps the company to hire a new professional whom the retiring employee can train in accordance to the work profile.

Writing a retirement letter is delivering your last words with regards to your professional life. It is not an easy task to convey your message in a cordial tone when you yourself are departing from the kind of work you have always been into. It’s a final good-bye to your work life or you can say a last piece of the delicious cake.

Here are some of the effective tips to write a retirement letter:

• The format of the retirement letter should consider all the key elements like your name, date of retirement, years of service in the specified company, corporate employee identification number, and the request to continue the retirement benefit contributions.
• It should be clear and to the point with no emotional content and any kind of misunderstanding.
• The tone of your content should be simple, friendly, and graceful. Be soft and gentle as these are considered to be the last words of your profession.
• It’s always good to mention the forwarding address. This will help you leave your trace behind and a hope to meet your fellow workers at some turn of life ahead.
• Create a short paragraph to state your appreciation for all the help and opportunities gained from the company. Clearly mention your thanks and gratitude to specified people who have been of great support through your tenure in the company.
• Show your eagerness to make a smooth exit from the company and also show your willingness to help whenever required and possible. Assurance is very important when writing a retirement letter.
• You can even show your interest to work as a freelance consultant till possible. If you are healthy and fit there is no harm to support your company in either way you wish to, on a full-time basis or on a part-time basis. You can use your time constructively.
• Then you can summarize your career highlights focusing on your accomplishments. When showing your contributions to the company, it’s a gesture to show and express your thanks for all that the company offered in you. Be generous in your words.
• Then at the end summarize your goodwill and wishes for the company, your fellow workers, supervisors, managers, and all those with whom you have worked through the years of your employment in the company.
